31 answers on server-side tracking, analytics, privacy compliance and how we work.

01

Analytics & Tools

Which analytics tools do you support?
We work primarily with Google Analytics 4 (GA4), Matomo and Piwik PRO. GA4 is the standard solution for companies using Google products. Matomo and Piwik PRO are our recommendation for organisations with the highest privacy requirements or those who don't want data sent to US servers (self-hosting possible).
Can you help us migrate from Universal Analytics to GA4?
Universal Analytics was discontinued in July 2024. If you haven't yet completed your GA4 migration, we strongly recommend doing so. We support migration, GA4 configuration and adapting your reports and dashboards to the GA4 data structure.
Do you build Data Studio dashboards?
Yes, that's a core part of our services. We build custom Data Studio dashboards connecting all relevant data sources — GA4, Google Ads, social media, CRM. Dashboards are tailored to your specific KPIs and update automatically.
What is the difference between GA4 and Matomo?
GA4 is Google's analytics platform — free, powerful, but with data transfer to Google (USA). Matomo is an open-source alternative that can be self-hosted — full data control, no data transfers, GDPR-friendly. Matomo is often the better choice for industries with heightened privacy requirements (healthcare, financial services, public sector).
Do you support BigQuery for deeper analysis?
Yes. We set up GA4-BigQuery exports and help you analyse raw event data directly in BigQuery. This enables complex queries, custom attribution models and the joining of analytics data with your own data sources (CRM, ERP, etc.) — far beyond what is possible in the GA4 interface.
Which ad platforms do you support for conversion tracking?
We implement conversion tracking for all major ad platforms: Google Ads, Meta Ads (Facebook/Instagram), LinkedIn Ads, TikTok Ads, Microsoft Ads and programmatic platforms such as DV360, CM360, SA360 and adform. Where possible, we use server-side implementations across all platforms for maximum data quality.

General

What exactly does rhyn.digital do?
rhyn.digital is a Swiss digital agency specialising in data engineering and analytics. We cover the entire data pipeline: from server-side data collection and tag management to analytics configuration, CRM integration, dashboards and data visualisation. We also offer strategic consulting on measurement strategy and privacy-compliant data processing.
Who are your services for?
Our services are for companies that want to make decisions based on reliable data. Typically these are e-commerce businesses, B2B SaaS providers, agencies, associations and SMEs in the DACH region — anyone for whom tracking quality and data precision are business-critical.
Do you work with existing agencies?
Yes, we enjoy it. We regularly work as tracking and analytics specialists alongside web agencies, performance agencies and digital teams. We integrate seamlessly into existing workflows and communicate directly with all stakeholders.
What languages do you consult in?
We consult in German and English. Our documentation and reports are produced in German by default, or in English on request.
Do you work with international clients?
We primarily serve companies in the DACH region (Switzerland, Germany, Austria). Projects with an international scope are possible — we work fully remote and have experience with multilingual implementations and international data protection requirements.
What sets rhyn.digital apart from other agencies?
We are pure data specialists — not a full-service provider treating analytics as a side discipline. Our focus is exclusively on the complete data pipeline: from collection through processing to visualisation. That means deeper expertise, clearer communication and results without detours.

Privacy & Compliance

Is server-side tracking GDPR-compliant?
Server-side tracking can be implemented in a more privacy-friendly way than classic client-side tracking — but it doesn't automatically guarantee GDPR compliance. Correct implementation is key: clean consent signals via Consent Mode v2, controlled data flows and server-side IP anonymisation. Server-side tracking is not a consent bypass. Without valid consent management, server-side tracking remains legally problematic. We implement according to nDSG and GDPR requirements — with documented data flows, a clear legal basis and full transparency.
What is Google Consent Mode v2 and do we need it?
Google Consent Mode v2 is a framework that adapts your tracking behaviour to users' consent decisions. Without consent, Google sends only anonymised signals (conversion modelling) rather than raw data. Since March 2024, GCMv2 has been mandatory for anyone using Google Ads — without correct implementation, conversion tracking no longer works reliably. We implement GCMv2 as standard in all our projects.
Do we need a Consent Management Platform (CMP)?
For websites that set tracking cookies or transfer personal data to third parties, a CMP is legally recommended — and effectively mandatory in the EU. We work with common CMPs such as Cookiebot, OneTrust, Usercentrics and CookieYes, and can advise on selection and integration. For simpler setups we can also develop custom consent solutions.
What is the difference between GDPR and the Swiss DSG?
The GDPR applies in the EU, the Swiss Data Protection Act (nDSG) in Switzerland. Both share similar core principles but differ in detail. Swiss companies that also process EU customer data often fall under both frameworks. We account for both legal systems in our implementations.
How do you ensure consent compliance?
We implement your tracking code so that it only activates once the user has given the appropriate consent (Google Consent Mode v2). This means: without consent, no personal data is collected or transmitted to third parties. We integrate with common Consent Management Platforms (CMPs) such as Cookiebot, OneTrust, or a custom solution.
Do you process our customer data?
During implementation, we have read access to analytics accounts and GTM containers. We do not process personal data belonging to your end users and have no access to your CRM, online shop, or similar systems — unless you explicitly grant us access for specific integration work.

Process & Pricing

How does a collaboration work?
Typical flow: discovery call (30 min., free) → audit (1–2 weeks) → proposal → implementation (3–8 weeks) → reporting setup (1–2 weeks) → optional: ongoing support. Every step is documented and communicated transparently.
What does it cost?
Our prices depend on scope and complexity. A tracking audit starts from CHF 1'500, a full GA4 implementation from CHF 3'000, and server-side tracking projects from CHF 5'000. For a tailored quote, we start with a free initial conversation. Monthly retainers for ongoing support start from CHF 500/month.
Do we need our own development team?
Not necessarily. Many implementations via Google Tag Manager can be done without direct changes to the source code. For server-side tracking and more complex integrations, occasional developer support is helpful, but we assist with coordination and provide clear specifications.
How long does a typical implementation take?
A GA4 setup without server-side tracking: 2–4 weeks. A full server-side tracking implementation: 6–10 weeks. A standalone audit: 1–2 weeks. Duration depends on the complexity of your tech stack, the number of events to track and the availability of your development team.
Do you offer support after implementation?
Yes. After every implementation we are available for questions. For ongoing support we offer monthly-cancellable retainer packages — including proactive monitoring, a monthly status call and priority support. Details and pricing on request.
How does communication work during a project?
We adapt to your existing processes. Typically this is a combination of weekly brief status updates by email, a shared project channel (Slack, Teams or email) and a bi-weekly video call. All interim results, decisions and specifications are documented in writing.
Can we end the engagement flexibly?
Yes. Project work is invoiced upon completion of the agreed deliverables — with no long-term commitment. Retainer packages for ongoing support are cancellable monthly. We believe a collaboration should be based on mutual value — not contractual pressure.

Server-Side Tracking

What is server-side tracking?
In classic client-side tracking, the user's browser sends data directly to tracking platforms (Google Analytics, Meta, etc.). Server-side tracking places your server as an intermediary layer: the browser sends data to your server, which processes and validates it before forwarding. This makes data collection independent of ad blockers, browser restrictions (ITP, ETP) and third-party cookie limitations.
What are the benefits of server-side tracking?
Greater data precision (up to 40% more captured events), independence from ad blockers, first-party cookie control with extended lifetimes, better privacy control, faster page load times due to less browser-side code, and the ability to cleanse and enrich data server-side before it's sent to platforms.
Which server-side tracking platforms do you support?
We implement server-side tracking primarily via Google Tag Manager Server Container (GTM SS) and Jentis. GTM SS is ideal for companies already using Google products. Jentis, as a European solution, offers additional privacy features. Commanders Act is also an option for enterprise-grade implementations.
Do I need my own server for server-side tracking?
Not necessarily. For Google Tag Manager server-side tracking you need a cloud infrastructure (Google Cloud, AWS, etc.). We help with setup and can recommend hosting solutions depending on your requirements. Monthly costs for a GTM server container typically range from CHF 20–100 depending on traffic volume.
Does server-side tracking affect website loading time?
Generally positively. Because significantly less JavaScript runs directly in the browser, the number of client-side tags is greatly reduced. This relieves the main thread and can noticeably improve Core Web Vitals — especially on mobile devices with slower connections.
Can server-side tracking be used for multiple websites simultaneously?
Yes. A GTM server container can be used for multiple domains and properties. This is particularly efficient for companies with multiple brands, country sites or microsites — one central infrastructure, consistent data quality, no duplicated effort.
